Wood Polishing Techniques

Polishing your furniture not only removes any dirt or smears from the wood, but can also help to cover or repair scratches. Depending on the type of wood you have, you can choose from several slightly different polishing techniques, although all follow the same broad pattern. Make polishing part of your weekly housekeeping routine to keep your furniture looking fresh and new.

Use polish the same color as the lightest part of your wood. You can use wood polish or even shoe polish, as long as it will not stain the wood. If you are unsure, test a small patch of wood that will not be easily seen, such as the back of a chair leg.

Remove the scratches from your wood before polishing. If your wood is dark, rub a Brazil nut meat on the scratch. This should fill it in. If you have cherry wood, then you will need to buy a polish that is red enough to cover the scratch. With light wood, you can cover stains and scratches by simply polishing.

Dip a cloth into the furniture polish and rub it onto the surface of the wood. Use small circular motions to rub the polish into the wood and create a shine. You should polish your wood once a week to keep it looking nice.

Wax your wood once a year. Use a soap solution to remove the existing layer of wax, and then apply new wax with a cloth to cover the furniture. This will leave your furniture looking brand new.
