Microsuede provides the soft look and feel of natural suede without the high price tag. This dense, knit blend fabric commonly contains polyester and is both water and stain resistant. Various products -- such as furniture, curtains and shoes -- are available in microsuede. Even though microsuede is considered stain resistant, stains can still develop on the fabric if you do not deal with spills immediately.
Before attempting to remove the stain, check the care instructions printed on the couch’s label. This label will indicate if you must use a solvent cleaner, water-based cleaner or both. For labels with the letter S, use dry-cleaning solvent. However, if the letter is a W, use a mixture of 1 tsp. clear dish soap and 2 cups of water. Use either the solvent or the water mixture if the label has both the S and W printed on it. In addition, always test the chosen cleaning method on an inconspicuous area of the microsuede couch. If damage or discoloration occurs, discontinue use.
Begin by blotting as much of the milk off the fabric as you can with several paper towels. If a stain remains, blot the discoloration with a cloth dampened in either the solvent or the dish soap mixture. Refer to the furniture’s care instructions for information on which cleaner to use.
Once the milk dries on the microsuede, brush it off the fabric with a soft cloth. Alternatively, use the upholstery attachment secured to the vacuum cleaner hose to remove the dried milk from the microsuede. If any stains remain, damp a clean cloth in either the dish soap mixture or dry-cleaning solvent. Refer to the furniture’s care instructions for information on which cleaner to use.
To keep the microsuede looking its best, run the vacuum cleaner upholstery attachment over the fabric once a week to remove surface dirt and debris. In addition, refrain from eating or drinking while sitting on the couch and keep pets off the furniture if possible. Taking these few precautions will help keep stains at bay.
