Scrub off any corrosion with a steel wool pad. This stops the corrosion from spreading.
Keep metals dry. This is the best way to stop corrosion from occurring. Wipe down the metal with paper towels or cloths on a regular basis or whenever the metal gets wet, if this practical.
Store the metal in a dark and cool place if possible. Keeping the metal out of humid rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms helps to cut down on the formation of corrosion. Avoiding direct sunlight also helps because the sunlight accelerates corrosion.
Apply a lubricant to the metal, if feasible. Shower-curtain rods and power tools made of metal can use a thin layer of mineral oil to act as a barrier against moisture. Re-apply the lubricant on a regular basis, a few times a month.
Apply a metal primer with a paintbrush. Primers provide corrosion resistance. Most metals are manufactured with a rust-proof or corrosion-proof layer, but these thin layers wear off. It is important to re-apply the primer every few years.
