How to Keep a Freezer Odor-Free

While your freezer provides you with a safe, temperature-controlled environment for everything from that home-cooked casserole your Aunt Edna gave you to your favorite frozen treats, it doesn't keep itself odor-free. Spills, leaks and strong-smelling cuisine can all fill your freezer with unpleasant and unwanted odors. Fortunately, you don't have to suffer the consequences of freezer stench; you can stop most problems before they arise if you take a proactive approach.

Clean up any spills immediately with a damp, soapy cloth. Don't allow them to stay in the freezer because they could give off an odor.

    • 2

Ensure that all packaged, frozen items are in airtight, sealed containers or packing to prevent odors from escaping. Wrap strong-smelling foods that you are preparing to freeze in several layers of heavy-duty aluminum foil or freezer paper before storing.

    • 3

Place an open container of baking soda in an undisturbed area of the freezer to absorb odors. Replace the container with a fresh one approximately every 30 days.
