How to Repair Central Vacuum Noise

Central vacuum cleaners are often used in large homes and businesses such as office buildings and hotels. The unit of the vacuum cleaner is mounted on a wall and tubing such as PVC pipe connects the unit to various outlets in the home. A hose and power wand connect to the outlet to use the vacuum. Although a central vacuum seems complex, noise can be reduced by performing some standard maintenance.

  Unplug the unit from its electrical outlet.

  Detach the hoses or pipes from the main pipe connection and utility connection. Detach the base of the unit from its casing. Remove the vacuum bag and filter that collects dirt and debris. Check the main pipe and utility connections for debris obstructing them.

  Use a flashlight to check the intake area of the central vacuum. An obstruction in the intake area where dirt and debris is collected and put in the vacuum bag will cause the unit to make noise. Put on utility gloves. Remove all obstructions from the intake area with your hands. Wipe the intake area clean with a dry, lint-free rag.

  Replace the bag and filter. Because the suction of a central vacuum is more powerful than a standard vacuum, debris such as paper clips in the vacuum bag can cause noise when the vacuum is operating.
