How to Get Shoe Polish That Has Thickened Out of the Bottle

When your shoes need to be shined, polished, waterproofed or waxed, shoe polish may be the product that you reach for. However, if you haven't reached for that bottle of shoe polish in a while, you may come to find that the polish thickened and is nearly impossible to pour out. Don't let thickened shoe polish make you think that you need to run to the store to pick up a new bottle, or stop you from shining those shoes altogether. Instead, try getting the shoe polish out of the bottle.

Cut the tip or top of the bottle spout with scissors. Create a larger opening for the thickened polish to come out through. While it may be impossible to squeeze the thick polish out of a small opening, a larger hole might be more successful.

Pour a few drops of water into the shoe polish bottle. Water loosens up the binding of the shoe polish ingredients to make it runnier. Close the top of the bottle after you add a few drop of water and shake the bottle vigorously. Open the cap and try pouring out the polish.

Add two to three drops of white spirit solvent, which you can purchase from a hardware store. White spirit solvent is a chemical that acts as a solvent and degreasing ingredient for paints, lacquers, varnishes and other types of preservatives. By adding a few drops of the white spirit into the bottle of shoe polish, you will dissolve some of the thickening properties of the polish so that it comes out of the bottle. The white solvent, however, may also weaken the effects of the polish.
