Open App Store on your Mac and search for macOS Monterey. Next to the Get button, click the downward-pointing triangle icon and choose Download macOS Monterey.
2. Create Bootable USB Installer
1. Wait for the macOS Monterey full installer to download. Once downloaded, exit the App Store. Launch Finder, click on Applications in the sidebar and find Install macOS Monterey.
2. Right-click the installer and select Show Package Contents.
3. Under the Contents folder, open SharedSupport.
4. Copy the InstallESD.dmg to your desktop or any easily accessible location.
5. Next, we need to create a bootable USB installer for the macOS Monterey. Get an 8GB or larger USB flash drive, connect it to your Mac and ensure there's nothing important in it as it will be erased during the process.
6. Open Disk Utility by searching for it using Spotlight or go to Applications/Utilities.
7. In Disk Utility, select your USB flash drive from the left-side panel.
8. Click the Erase button at the top, give your USB a recognizable name, select APFS for the Format and click Erase.
9. After formatting the USB drive, click Restore.
10. In the Restore window, drag and drop the InstallESD.dmg file you copied earlier to the Source field.
11. Select the USB flash drive as the Destination and click Restore.
12. Enter the admin password if prompted and wait as your macOS Monterey bootable USB installer is being created.
3. Boot M1 Mac in Restore Mode
Before proceeding with this step, ensure your macOS Monterey bootable USB is connected to your Mac. To boot your Apple silicon Mac in restore mode, follow these steps:
1. Turn off your Mac.
2. Once the Mac is off, press and hold the power button.
3. Keep holding the power button until you see Options appear on the screen.
4. Click the Options gear icon and choose Continue.
4. Reinstall macOS Monterey
1. In the macOS Utilities window, select Reinstall macOS Monterey.
2. Click Continue and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the macOS Monterey reinstallation.
5. Set Up Your Mac
After the reinstallation is complete, your Mac will restart and you'll be prompted to set it up. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your Mac and transfer your data from a Time Machine backup or iCloud.
