Proper Placement of CO Detectors

There are several kinds of detectors you can place in your home to protect you and your family from potentially harmful substances. One is a carbon monoxide (CO) detector. A CO detector detects carbon monoxide in the air. This extremely poisonous gas causes carbon monoxide poisoning if inhaled, and if exposure is high enough, can result in death. If you properly place your CO detectors in your home, you and your family have no need to worry about carbon monoxide poisoning.

Instructions

    • 1

Place one CO detector in your basement just outside your utility room. An additional detector should be placed in the basement if a bedroom is present.

    • 2

Hang a CO detector in the main hallway or entry way of the first floor of your home. This is especially important if you have a bedroom on the first floor.

    • 3

Install at least one CO detector in the upstairs hallway of your home. It should be near all bedrooms. If you have an oddly shaped or large floorplan, two or three CO detectors may be needed upstairs.

    • 4

Place a CO detector in any other area of your home that has a bedroom, such as an attic or above the garage. All sleeping family members must have a functioning CO detector nearby.
