How to Change the Battery in an In-Home Security System

When you have an in-home security system, you want to make sure your system is capable of performing at all times. Most electrical alarm systems come with a battery backup system. The battery backup allows your home security system to continue functioning in the event of a power failure. However, if you have a wireless in-home security system, all you have available is battery power. Depending on the type of home security system you have, you might hear a beep or "chirp" alerting you that it is time for your battery to be changed.

Contact the company that monitors your alarm system to advise them that you are about to turn your system off for a moment so the battery can be changed. This will prevent an alert from going off at the monitoring center advising them that your system has been disconnected.

    • 2

Unplug the AC power cord (if there is one).

    • 3

Remove the front face plate from the mounted security box. Depending on the type of security box you have, it might be necessary to press a release mechanism to release the face plate from the rest of the unit. Other units may have screws holding the face plate.

    • 4

Remove the old battery from the unit. If there is more than one battery in the unit, remove both or all of them.

    • 5

Insert the new battery (or batteries) into the battery slots. Be sure the replacement battery you are using is the same type of battery as the old battery. Using the wrong type of battery can cause a potential fire or explosion.

    • 6

Replace the front face plate back onto the mounted security box. The box might click as you snap it back into place. If there is no click, gently pull the face plate to ensure is securely attached to the rest of the security box.

    • 7

Plug the AC power cord back into the electrical outlet.
