How to Make a Home Fire Plan

In the event of a fire in your home, having a fire escape plan could mean the difference between life and death. Knowing exactly what needs to be done helps to avoid panic, even in small children. After creating your home fire plan, practicing it periodically will ensure that all members of your family know how to react if a fire should occur. If you reside in an apartment building, use the building's fire escape route combined with your own plan for your apartment.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a floor plan of your home on a large sheet of paper or poster board. Include all levels, such as basements or upper stories.

    • 2

Mark at least two ways to escape from each room. The door is the obvious escape, and a secondary escape route should be a window or other exit.

    • 3

Open and close all planned exits to ensure that they work properly and can be used easily. Windows will need to unlock and open easily, and both doors and windows need to be clear of furniture and other objects that limit accessibility.

    • 4

Choose a place outside of the home where the family is to meet in case of a fire. This will allow you to know for sure that everyone is out of the home.

    • 5

Stage a fire drill. Time the drill to encourage everyone to leave the home as quickly as possible. Continue practicing until everyone knows it well.
