How to Remove Patio Doors

Patio doors are made up of two panels. One panel slides freely back and forth along its tracks while the other panel remains fixed in half the opening. Removal of both panels becomes necessary to properly clean the sliding tracks or to replace them if one becomes damaged. Patio door removal is a quick job; however, ask a friend to help since the panels are heavy.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Spread a drop cloth in front of the patio door to protect the flooring. Find the adjustment screws' plugs on either the sliding panel's interior side or edge. Pull out the plugs to expose the screws.

    • 2

Stand outside facing the fixed patio panel. Look inside the bottom track for the sill cap, which extends from the panel to the opposite door jamb. Push a flat screwdriver into the space between the panel and the cap and pry up the cap.

    • 3

Go inside and look for all the screws securing the fixed patio panel to the opening. Remove all the screws you find with a drill and Phillips drill bit. Slide the fixed panel toward the sliding panel. Double check for any missed screws if the panel does not move. Insert a pry bar between the panel and the opening if all screws are removed but the panel remains stuck.

Stand outside and grasp the fixed panel with both hands. Lift the panel up and swing pull its bottom edge toward you. Lower the panel to remove it from the upper track. Set the fixed panel aside.

    • 5

Turn the adjustment screws counterclockwise to lower the sliding panel. Open the door as wide as it goes. Use a drill and Phillips drill bit to remove the screws holding the head stop in place. The head stop is in the top track.

Grasp the sliding panel with one hand on either side. Lift the panel as high as it goes and pull the bottom edge toward you. Lower the bottom edge once it clears the track. Set the sliding panel aside.
