How to Fix a Vertical Sliding Window in a Bathroom

Vertical sliding windows are found in many older homes, particularly in bathrooms where there isn't a lot of room for larger windows. These windows can get jammed or off track as they age or if they get jarred. You can fix these yourself instead of calling in a repairman by examining the window to determine the problem. Once you determine the exact issue and correct it, the window should slide smoothly up and down without catching.

Things You'll Need

  • Vacuum with attachments

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the sliding window tracks with a brush nozzle attachment to remove any debris that is making the window catch. Slide the window up and down to vacuum all parts of the track.

    • 2

Remove the sash from the window by unscrewing the hardware or screws that keep it in place. All windows are a little different; the window may have locks or other stoppers.

    • 3

Tilt the window sash and lift it up and out of the frame. Examine the track.

    • 4

Vacuum the track again, now that it is clearly invisible.

    • 5

Straighten the tracks by placing a wood block on one side and pounding the block with a hammer to align the tracks. Work slowly so you don't further bend the tracks.

    • 6

Spray a silicone lubricant onto a cloth and wipe it into the tracks to help the window move easier.

    • 7

Reinstall the window by sliding it back in position and screwing the hardware in place.
