Step 2: Measure and Cut the Framing Lumber
The first step is to measure the window opening and cut the framing lumber to size. The header (top) and sill (bottom) pieces will be the same length as the window opening. The king studs (vertical pieces) will be 84 inches long (7 feet).
Step 3: Install the Header and Sill
Next, install the header and sill. The header should be nailed into the brick wall with 16d galvanized nails. The sill should be nailed to the bottom of the header with 16d galvanized nails.
Step 4: Install the King Studs
Now, install the king studs. The king studs should be nailed into the header and sill with 16d galvanized nails.
Step 5: Install the Cripples
The cripples are the short pieces of framing lumber that go between the king studs. The cripples should be nailed into the header and sill with 16d galvanized nails.
Step 6: Install the Jambs
The jambs are the vertical pieces of framing lumber that go on either side of the window opening. The jambs should be nailed into the header, sill, and cripples with 16d galvanized nails.
Step 7: Install the Trim
Finally, install the trim. The trim can be any type of wood that you like. The trim should be nailed into the framing lumber with 16d galvanized nails.
Step 8: Finish the Window Frame
Once the window frame is installed, you can finish it by painting or staining it. You can also add weatherstripping to the window frame to help keep out the elements.
