Lay drop cloths over any areas you do not want covered with mortar such as countertops, cabinets and flooring.
Sand wooden surfaces with 80-grit sandpaper to achieve a textured feel to the wood surface. This allows the mortar to adhere to the wood in a consistent manner.
Pour a bag of mortar into a wheelbarrow or 5-gallon bucket and mix in the appropriate amount of water for the amount of mortar you will use. Follow the directions on the bag. It has a list of ratios. Mix the mortar in the bucket with a paddle plaster mixer and a hand drill. This mixes up the water in the mortar that rises to the top.
Scoop up enough mortar on a 1/8-inch notched trowel to cover ¾ of the trowel surface, approximately 2 inches deep.
Spread the mortar across the surface of the wall. Make sure the edge of the trowel touches the wall at all times. This will create a consistent ¼-inch deep layer of mortar across the surface. With a ¼-inch trowel, you can cover approximately 80-to-95-feet with one 50-pound bag of mortar.
Wait approximately 20 minutes and then apply your stone to the mortar.
