How to Hang Shelves On Plaster Concrete Walls

Plaster walls are incredibly hard, and this is particularly true if they are plaster over concrete. Care must be taken when hanging shelves on this material. Unlike a wooden wall, where you can simply screw the shelves into the wall studs, you must use a special masonry bit and screws to ensure that the shelf is installed securely and will not fall. With the right tools, however, this job should only take a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Place drop cloths underneath the project area. This project may produce some dust as you go through the plaster and concrete. Put on safety glasses, a mask and gloves to protect yourself.

    • 2

Mark where you want the shelves. If the entire wall behind is masonry, you won't have to worry about finding studs. Mark off with a pencil where you want the shelves to go.

    • 3

Attach a masonry bit to your drill and start the holes for the shelves.

    • 4

Insert masonry anchors into the holes. This will help give the screws a little more to bite into and will help support the weight of the shelves.

    • 5

Attach the brackets. Place the brackets over the holes and drill masonry screws through the bracket holes. Make sure each screw is flush with the bracket.

    • 6

Switch to a regular screwdriver bit on your drill and attach the shelves to the brackets. Clean up your work area and remove the drop cloths.
