How to Replace the Outlet Box in a Brick Wall

Tools and materials:

- Safety goggles

- Hammer

- Pry bar

- Electrician's screwdriver

- Wire stripper

- Pliers

- Replacement outlet box

- Screws

Instructions

Step 1: Turn off the power.

Before you begin any electrical work, make sure that the power to the outlet is turned off. You can do this by flipping the circuit breaker for the outlet to the "Off" position.

Step 2: Remove the old outlet box.

Use a pry bar to remove nails and screws around the old outlet box in the brick wall. Be careful not to damage the brick surrounding the outlet box. Once the nails and screws are removed, use the pry bar to pry the outlet box out of the wall.

Step 3: Disconnect the wires.

Once the outlet box is removed from the wall, disconnect the wires that are connected to it. Use an electrician's screwdriver to loosen the screws that hold the wires in place. Be careful not to drop any of the screws into the wall.

Step 4: Strip the wires.

Use a wire stripper to strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from the end of each wire. Be careful not to nick or cut the wires.

Step 5: Connect the wires to the new outlet box.

Connect the wires to the new outlet box in the same way that they were connected to the old outlet box. Use an electrician's screwdriver to tighten the screws that hold the wires in place.

Step 6: Secure the new outlet box to the wall.

Place the new outlet box in the hole in the wall and secure it with screws. Make sure that the outlet box is flush with the wall.

Step 7: Turn on the power.

Flip the circuit breaker for the outlet to the "On" position to turn on the power to the outlet. Test the outlet to make sure that it is working properly.

Tips

- If the outlet box is damaged or broken, you may need to replace it with a larger outlet box.

- If the wires are too short to reach the new outlet box, you may need to extend them with wire nuts or butt connectors.

- If you are not comfortable with electrical work, you may want to hire an electrician to replace the outlet box for you.
