How to Install an Attic Vent Fan

Installing an attic fan lowers the temperature inside your attic. Attic fans blow excess hot air out of your home. Attic fans also create more airflow throughout your entire home. Attic fans help lower condensation in homes that do not contain ridge vents or soffit vents. Before installing an attic vent fan, you may wish to ensure your attic contains louvers and a power supply cord. These items –louvers and power supply cord--must be present before the installation of an attic vent fan.

Instructions

    • 1

Mount your attic fan centered in the middle of the louvers (gable vents) located in your attic. Screw the fan onto your studs or rafters (located on each side of your louvers) in your attic with your screwdriver and screws. If the fan is too small to be supported this way, add cross supports with two-by-fours to attach your fan.

    • 2

Install the regulator to a stud, or rafter within reach of your fan cable with screws and your screwdriver.

    • 3

Insert your fan cable into the bottom of the regulator casing. Tighten the clamp or locknut with your screwdriver to hold your fan cable securely in place.

    • 4

Attach your fan wires to your regulator wires, according to the manufacturer’s directions. This varies depending upon the fan purchased. Typically, the black fan wire connects to the black regulator wire and the white fan wire connects to the red regulator wire. If your regulator does not have a red wire, connect the white wire to the white regulator wire. Secure all wires using wire nuts by twisting the wire nuts onto the wire ends.

    • 5

Insert the power supply cable into the top of the regulator casing and tighten the cable clamp with your screwdriver.

    • 6

Attach your white power supply wire to the white regulator wire. Attach the black power supply wire to the black regulator wire, and secure with wire nuts. Loosen the green screw located inside your regulator box with your screwdriver and attach the bare copper wire from the power supply wire to the green screw. Wrap the bare copper wire around the smallest part of the green screw. Tighten the screw head back into place with your screwdriver; this ensures your attic fan is grounded.

    • 7

Replace the regulator cover by screwing it back onto the regulator box.

    • 8

Set the temperature control on your attic fan to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Your attic fan should run until the temperature in your attic is lower than 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
