How to Adjust Cooling Dampers

Adjust your cooling dampers to better regulate the coolness or warmth of any room in your home. Duct dampers, as they are commonly referred to, help to control the airflow throughout the house. In essence, they control how much airflow is being utilized in a room from the main duct.

Place thermometers near the duct entrances in every room that you want to adjust the cooling dampers. Read the thermometer in each room to determine if the room needs to be warmer or cooler to be at the desired comfort level.

    • 2

According to the thermometers readings, adjust the dampers accordingly. Turn downward on the damper slightly to open the damper a little and increase airflow to the room. Turn the damper handle horizontally, toward the duct area to completely close the damper and block airflow to the room. Turn the damper handle down completely to fully open the damper.

Continue to monitor the temperatures of the rooms for two or three days. Adjust the dampers until you get the temperatures that you desire.
