What Is an Air Damper?

An air damper is a device that regulates or cuts off the flow of air in a duct system. Air dampers are typically valves or plates that block or lessen the flow of air.
  1. Ventiliation

    • In homes or other buildings with a large-scale ventilation system, an air damper can be used to let fresh air into the building as needed. When the exhaust fan is on to expel stale air, the damper will open to allow fresh air to come in.

    Kitchen Ranges

    • Air dampers can be used in conjunction with the hoods of large kitchen ranges, either in homes or in restaurants or other establishments with a kitchen. When the hood is on, pulling air and smoke from the range, an air damper also opens to resupply the kitchen with fresh air.

    Heating and Air Conditioning

    • Air dampers can be used in heating and central air conditioning systems to block the flow of treated air from unused rooms. Shutting the damper prevents heated or cooled air from entering these rooms, saving the owner money on utility bills.
