How to Connect a Booster Fan to My Dryer Outlet

A booster fan is a fan that is nestled in a piece of air duct, such as a furnace duct or dryer vent, to aid in moving air through the system. A booster fan is typically used on an air duct that is very long. You can connect a booster fan to your dryer's ventilation outlet to ensure the hot air is whisked from the dryer through the duct and out of your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate an area on the dryer's ventilation ductwork where you want to mount the booster fan; it should be a minimum of 5 feet from the dryer's ventilation outlet and past the second lint trap if one is present.

    • 2

Grasp the ventilation ductwork and pull it apart if it is composed of two duct pieces that are connected together. If the ventilation duct is one solid piece, you must cut it in half with a hacksaw in the spot where you want to insert the booster fan.

    • 3

Slide the booster fan onto the two ventilation duct pieces; ensure that the control box on the ventilation fan is facing outwards so that you can access it if necessary.

    • 4

Screw the fan's mounting bracket into a stud on the nearest wall or ceiling panel, depending on where the ductwork is located. Place the bracket against the stud to which you want to attach it, then screw it in place using wood screws and a drill.

    • 5

Place the fan on the mounting bracket and secure it in place. Depending on your booster fan model, you may have to clip it in place with clasps that are already on the fan, or you may have to screw it onto the bracket with bolts included with the fan and a screwdriver.

    • 6

Plug the booster fan's power cord into a power outlet on the wall or ceiling. If the nearest power outlet is too far away, you can plug the fan into a short extension cord, then plug the other end of the extension cord into the power outlet.

    • 7

Turn on the fan by pressing its power button or flipping its power switch. The fan will automatically begin to spin when it detects air pressure coming through the air vent, and will stop spinning once the air pressure returns to normal.
