What Are the Causes of Exhaust Fumes in Cabin a Vehicle?

Exhaust Fume Symptoms & Causes

Fumes inside your vehicle can cause headaches, nausea, irritation, and accidents!

* Leaking Exhaust: Exhaust fumes can easily leak into the cabin through a hole or crack in the exhaust system. This is a serious safety hazard and should be fixed immediately.

* Malfunctioning Catalytic Converter: The catalytic converter is responsible for converting harmful pollutants from the engine exhaust into less harmful gases. If the catalytic converter is not working properly, it can cause exhaust fumes to leak into the cabin. Sometimes the catalytic converter is stolen because it contains rare metals that are valuable. You will often hear a loud roaring noise under your car if this happens.

* Broken Seals or Gaskets: Seals or gaskets around the engine and exhaust components must be in good condition to prevent leaks. Over time, heat can damage these seals, allowing exhaust fumes to leak into the cabin.

* Negative Cabin Pressure: When the air pressure in the cabin is lower than the air pressure outside, it can draw exhaust fumes into the car. This can happen when the windows and doors are closed and the air conditioner or fan is on.

* Cracked Heater Core: The heater core is a device that uses the heat from the engine to warm up the air inside the cabin. If the heater core cracks, it can allow exhaust fumes to leak into the cabin.

* Backfiring Engine: An engine that backfires can push exhaust fumes into the cabin. This is a serious safety hazard and should be fixed immediately.
