How to Remove and Replace Shingles on a Gerard Metal Roof

Gerard metal roofs have shingles to protect them from the elements. Over time, a shingle may show signs of damage or become loose and you may need to replace it. Single shingle removal and replacement takes only minutes and requires only minor tools. It is important to replace damaged or loose shingles to prevent damage to your metal roof.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide a flat-bar under the shingle that sits above the shingle you are removing, and then lift up on the pray-bar to pry up the shingle. The shingles are longer than they look, therefore they are nailed in place through the shingle above them.

    • 2

Pull out the nail that the pry bar pulled up and removed from the roof. This will not loosen the shingle that is above the one that you need to replace.

    • 3

Slide the shingle out from under the shingle that you inserted the pry bar under. The top shingle will still be secure.

    • 4

Slide the new shingle into place where the damaged shingle was, under the top shingle, and ensure it is in line with the other shingles around it. Only a portion of the shingle will slide underneath the shingle above.

    • 5

Insert and hammer in a roofing nail about 1-inch from the bottom of the top shingle. You do not insert a nail directly into the visible part of the shingle you are replacing. The nail goes into the section of the shingle that is tucked under the one above it. Insert one nail every three to four inches.
