Before you begin any work, make sure you have all the safety gear you need, including a hard hat, eye protection, gloves, and a sturdy ladder.
Step 2: Assess the Damage
Inspect the rafter ends carefully to determine the extent of the rot. Make sure to check the areas where the rafters meet the roof deck and the fascia boards.
Step 3: Remove the Damaged Rafters
Use a pry bar to carefully remove the damaged rafter ends. Be careful not to damage the surrounding roof deck or fascia boards.
Step 4: Cut New Rafter Ends
Measure the length of the damaged rafter ends and cut new ones to the same size. Make sure the new rafter ends are the same size and shape as the original ones.
Step 5: Install the New Rafter Ends
Position the new rafter ends in place and nail them to the roof deck and the fascia boards. Make sure the nails are long enough to penetrate the roof deck and the fascia boards securely.
Step 6: Apply Wood Preservative
Apply a wood preservative to the new rafter ends to help protect them from future rot and decay.
Step 7: Reinstall the Roof
Reinstall the roof shingles or other roofing material that you removed in order to access the rafter ends. Make sure the roof is properly secured and watertight.
Step 8: Inspect and Maintain Regularly
Inspect the roof regularly for any signs of damage, and make any necessary repairs as soon as possible. Regular maintenance will help keep your roof in good condition and prevent future problems.
