Instructions:
1. Measure and Cut the Roof Rafters:
* Determine the rafter length by measuring the distance from the ridge board to the eave.
* Cut the rafters to the appropriate length using a circular saw.
2. Install the Hip Rafters:
* Install hip rafters at each corner of the roof.
* Attach the hip rafters to the ridge board and the eave with 16d framing nails.
3. Install the Common Rafters:
* Install common rafters between the hip rafters.
* Space the common rafters evenly, typically at 16 or 24 inches on center.
* Attach the common rafters to the hip rafters with 16d framing nails.
4. Cut and Install the Ridge Board:
* Cut the ridge board to the appropriate length.
* Install the ridge board at the peak of the roof.
* Attach the ridge board to the hip rafters with 16d framing nails.
5. Install the Roof Sheathing:
* Install roof sheathing over the rafters.
* Use 1/2-inch plywood or oriented strand board (OSB).
* Attach the roof sheathing to the rafters with 8d nails.
6. Install the Roof Shingles:
* Install roof shingles over the roof sheathing.
* Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing the roof shingles.
Tips:
* Make sure the hip rafters are plumb and square before installing the common rafters.
* Install the roof shingles in a straight line, starting at the eave and working up to the ridge.
* Wear safety glasses when cutting and installing the rafters and roof sheathing.
