How to Build a Birdhouse Roof with Pieces that Overlap

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

* 1x4 pine boards (2)

* 1x6 pine board (1)

* Wood glue

* Clamps

* Miter saw

* Circular saw

* Drill

* 1-1/4-inch brad nails

* Hammer

Step 2: Cut the Boards

* Cut the 1x4 pine boards to the following lengths:

* (2) 12 inches long

* (2) 8 inches long

* Cut the 1x6 pine board to the following lengths:

* (2) 12 inches long

Step 3: Assemble the Roof Frame

* Apply wood glue to one edge of each of the 12-inch 1x4 pine boards.

* Clamp the boards together, with the glued edges facing each other.

* Drill two 1-1/4-inch brad nails through the boards, one near each end.

Step 4: Attach the Roof

* Center the roof frame on top of the birdhouse.

* Apply wood glue to the bottom edge of the roof frame.

* Clamp the roof frame to the birdhouse.

* Drill two 1-1/4-inch brad nails through the roof frame into the birdhouse, one near each end.

Step 5: Add the Overlapping Pieces

* Cut the 8-inch 1x4 pine boards in half diagonally, creating four triangular pieces.

* Apply wood glue to the back of each triangular piece.

* Position the triangular pieces on the roof, overlapping the roof frame by about 1 inch.

* Clamp the triangular pieces in place.

* Drill two 1-1/4-inch brad nails through each triangular piece into the roof frame.

Your birdhouse roof is now complete!
