How to Adjust the Pressure Regulator on a Jet Well Pump

A jet pump uses suction and leverages the power of atmospheric pressure to draw water from a shallow well. The pump operates on principles of physics similar to sucking liquid through a straw. An electric motor powers the pump, although at a certain point in the system, a strong suction takes over to draw up water from the well. Jet pumps are designed to be installed above ground, so adjusting the unit takes only a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the fuse from the fuse box or shut off the circuit breaker that controls electricity to the pump.

    • 2

Loosen and remove the bolts holding the metal cover over the pump, using a wrench or pliers. Remove the pump cover to locate the two nuts surrounded by coiled springs.

    • 3

Twist the larger nut clockwise to increase the pressure for pumping water when the jet pump switches on. Twist the smaller nut clockwise to increase the water pressure level at which the pump will cut off. The pressure settings determine when the pump will activate and when it is idle. For example, if a water faucet is turned on, the pump will activate after a few minutes to sustain water pressure.

    • 4

Replace the pump cover and bolt it securely to the pump housing.

    • 5

Restore electrical power to the pump.
