Connect a PVC male adapter to the elbow at the top of the pressure tank. Grasp the elbow with a pipe wrench and hold it while you tighten the male adapter with a second pipe wrench. This prevents you from putting too much stress on the elbow and possibly breaking its connection with the pressure tank.
Coat the end of a 12-inch section of PVC -- in the same diameter as the male adapter you just installed -- with PVC cement. Insert the pipe into the male adapter.
Open the cover of the pressure switch on the top of your well pump and find the numbers that indicate the cut-in pressure for the pump. This is the point at which the pump will come on and start pumping water in to the pressure tank. You will need to set the pressure on your pressure tank to 2 to 4 pounds less than this number.
Check the factory-set pressure on your pressure tank by applying a tire gauge to the valve on the pressure tank. Let air out of the tank by pressing on the valve with the tire gauge until the pressure in the tank is 2 to 4 pounds less than the cut-in pressure of your well pump.
Apply PVC cement to the other end of the short section of PVC you attached to your pressure tank and attach this end to the pipe fitting on your well pump. Allow to dry.
Turn on your well pump, or you can open a faucet and wait for the well pump to start.
