How to Install an Auto Vent in a Drain

Installing an auto vent in a drain is relatively easy and can be done in less than an hour. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

Tools and Materials:

1. Auto vent

2. Pipe cutter

3. Emery cloth

4. Two pipe clamps

5. ABS cement and primer

6. Safety glasses

7. Rags

8. Plumber's putty

Step 1: Prepare the drain:

- Locate the drain where you need to install the auto vent. It's usually found on the highest point of the drain line, typically under a sink.

Step 2: Measure and cut the drain pipe:

- Measure the diameter of the drain pipe. Auto vents are available in various sizes, so choose one that fits the diameter of your pipe.

- Use a pipe cutter to cut the drain pipe where you intend to install the auto vent. Make sure the cut is clean and straight.

Step 3: Clean and deburr the pipe ends:

- Use emery cloth to clean and remove any burrs from the cut ends of the pipe. This will help ensure a proper seal when you attach the auto vent.

Step 4: Apply ABS cement and primer:

- Apply ABS primer to the inside and outside of the pipe end where the auto vent will attach.

- Apply ABS cement to the corresponding surfaces on the auto vent and the inside of the pipe end.

Step 5: Attach the auto vent:

- Insert the auto vent into the primed and cemented section of the pipe.

- Push it in firmly until it's fully seated and the cement forms a seal.

Step 6: Secure the auto vent with clamps:

- Slip a pipe clamp over the auto vent and tighten it around the pipe. This will help prevent the vent from moving or coming loose.

- Repeat this step on the other side of the auto vent.

Step 7: Let the cement cure:

- Allow the ABS cement to cure for the time recommended by the manufacturer. This typically takes several hours.

Step 8: Test the auto vent:

- Once the cement has cured, turn on the water supply and check for leaks. If you notice any leaks, tighten the pipe clamps further. Also check that the vent opens and closes properly.

Step 9: Clean up and apply plumber's putty:

- Use a rag to clean any excess ABS cement or primer around the auto vent.

- Apply plumber's putty around the base of the vent to ensure a tight seal.
