Difficulty: Moderate
Tools Needed: Adjustable wrench, Phillips-head screwdriver, Needle-nose pliers
Materials Needed: New diverter valve, O-rings
Time Required: 30 minutes
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1.Turn off the water supply. There are usually two valves under the sink, one for hot water and one for cold water. Turn both valves to the “Off” position.
2.Remove the faucet handle. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nut holding the faucet handle in place. Remove the nut and take off the faucet handle.
3.Remove the old diverter valve. There will be either a screw or a clip holding the diverter valve in place. Use a screwdriver to remove the screw, or use needle-nose pliers to remove the clip. Pull out the old diverter valve.
4.Inspect the O-rings. The old diverter valve may have come with O-rings that need to be replaced. Inspect the O-rings for any signs of wear or damage. If the O-rings are worn or damaged, you will need to replace them.
5.Install the new diverter valve. Insert the new diverter valve into the faucet body. Make sure the O-rings are in place.
6.Secure the diverter valve. If there was a screw holding the old diverter valve in place, use a screwdriver to insert the screw and tighten it. If there was a clip holding the old diverter valve in place, use the needle-nose pliers to insert the clip and secure it.
7.Replace the faucet handle. Put the faucet handle back on and secure it with the nut. Turn the water supply back on and check for leaks.
Tips:
Make sure you turn off the water supply before you start working on the faucet.
Be careful not to lose the O-rings when you remove the old diverter valve.
If you have a Peerless faucet with a pull-out sprayer, you may need to remove the spout in order to access the diverter valve.
