How to Install Unions in Copper Plumbing Pipe

Step 1: Gather Your Tools and Materials

For this project, you will need the following tools and materials:

* Two ¾-inch copper slip joint unions

* Two ¾-inch copper x ½-inch FIP male adapters

* Two ½-inch copper caps

* Tube cutter

* Reamer

* Sandpaper

* Flux

* Solder

* Soldering iron

* Adjustable wrench

* Tape measure

* Pencil

Step 2: Prepare the Pipe

Use the tape measure and pencil to mark the pipe where you will make the cuts for the unions. Cut the pipe using the tube cutter, being careful not to damage the pipe. Use the reamer to remove any burrs from the inside of the pipe. Sand the ends of the pipe with sandpaper to smooth them out.

Step 3: Apply Flux

Apply a thin layer of flux to the ends of the pipe and the inside of the slip joint unions. The flux will help the solder to adhere to the metal.

Step 4: Solder the Unions

Hold the slip joint union over one of the ends of the pipe and heat the joint with the soldering iron. Apply solder to the joint, allowing it to flow into the gap between the pipe and the union. Repeat this process for the other end of the pipe.

Step 5: Attach the Male Adapters

Screw the male adapters into the slip joint unions. Tighten the adapters with an adjustable wrench.

Step 6: Attach the Caps

Screw the caps onto the male adapters. Tighten the caps with an adjustable wrench.

Step 7: Test the Joints

Turn on the water supply and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the joints until they stop.
