How to Finish Slab Concrete Floors

If you would like to enhance the appearance of your drab, ordinary slab concrete floor, you have a pair of options. You can apply a simple clear finish that will provide a glossy sheen and protect the floor from stains, or you can add color to the surface by finishing it with the appropriate paint. Unfortunately, slab concrete is poorly suited for paint adhesion. You must pre-treat the floor with a special etching solution, or you will eventually end up with shedding. In addition, choose a special paint, formulated to withstand high levels of duress.

Clean the slab concrete floor, using a pressure washer. Use a mop and bucket if you are working indoors. Allow the slab concrete to dry for about four to six hours.

    • 2

Mix the etching crystals with 2 gallons of water in a plastic 5-gallon bucket. Use a wooden stir stick to stir the mixture for at least three minutes.

    • 3

Spread the etching solution over the slab concrete floor, using a squeegee. Wait 15 minutes, and then use the pressure washer or mop to rinse the slab concrete. Wait another four to six hours until the floor is dry.

    • 4

Mix the epoxy catalyst and resin in a plastic 5-gallon bucket, using a new wooden stir stick.

    • 5

Apply the epoxy paint to the slab concrete floor, using a roller. Wait six full hours before walking onto the slab concrete.
