The Best Way to Paint PVC for Exterior Use

As is the case with all other painting jobs, painting PVC for exterior use is all about preparation. The PVC must be clean and free of mildew, dirt or anything that may interfere with the paint bonding to the surface. In order to have the best finish possible, paint professionals suggest using 100-percent acrylic latex paints that will cure over time and bond to the surface.

Things You'll Need

  • Bucket
  • Bleach
  • Soft-bristled brush
  • Cloth
  • 220-grit sandpaper
  • Acrylic latex primer suitable for exterior PVC
  • Paintbrush or roller
  • Exterior acrylic latex paint

Instructions

    • 1

Mix one part bleach and three parts water in a bucket if mildew is present on the PVC. Apply the mixture to the PVC and allow it to sit for 20 minutes. Rinse it off thoroughly.

    • 2

Clean the PVC with a mixture of detergent and water. Use a soft-bristled brush to scrub it free of any dirt or mildew. Rinse and allow the PVC to dry.

    • 3

Lightly sand shiny parts of the PVC with 220-grit sandpaper to create a better bonding surface for the paint. Use a damp cloth to wipe off the dust.

    • 4

Prime the PVC with one coat of acrylic primer. For large surfaces, use a paint roller; for smaller surfaces, a standard paintbrush is fine. Apply with even brush strokes.

    • 5

Apply the finishing coat. Paint the PVC in the same fashion as the primer coat using exterior acrylic latex paint.
