Materials Needed:
- Hemp fibers (retted and washed)
- Deckled mold and frame (or window screen)
- Wooden frame (to support mold and frame)
- Pressing surface (flat board, metal sheet, etc.)
- Heavy weight (books or press)
- Blender or food processor
- Large container for soaking the fibers
- Stirring utensil (wood or stainless steel)
- Water
Step 1: Fiber Preparation:
- Soak the hemp fibers in a large container filled with water.
- Leave the fibers to soak overnight or for several hours until softened.
- Gently beat or agitate the fibers to loosen any dirt, debris, or impurities.
- Drain the water, rinse, and clean the fibers several times until the water runs clear.
- Spread out the fibers evenly and allow them to dry completely.
Step 2: Blending or Pulping:
- Once the hemp fibers are dry, use a blender or food processor to pulp them.
- Start by adding small amounts of hemp fiber to the blender or food processor, blending until the fibers become finely chopped and fluffy.
- Gradually add more fibers until you have a consistency similar to wet oatmeal or pulp.
- Note: Use small batches to avoid overwhelming your equipment and ensure even blending.
Step 3: Preparing the Mold and Frame:
- Set up the wooden frame, mesh frame (or window screen), and deckle box.
- Place the mesh frame over the wooden frame, ensuring that it is secure.
- Place the deckle box on top of the mesh frame, forming a shallow "vat."
Step 4: Making the Paper:
- Fill the vat about halfway with water.
- Add the hemp pulp into the water and gently mix it with your stirring utensil, spreading the fibers evenly across the vat.
- Tilt and shake the vat slightly to distribute the fibers uniformly.
Step 5: Forming the Sheet:
- Carefully lower the deckle box until the water level reaches the top of the frame, creating a thin layer of pulp on the mesh.
- Slowly lift the frame and deckle box together to allow the water to drain, leaving behind the formed sheet on the mesh frame.
Step 6: Pressing:
- Place a damp couching cloth or felt on top of the formed sheet on the mesh frame.
- Slowly flip the frame and couching cloth together to transfer the sheet onto the cloth.
- Press gently to remove excess water from the sheet.
Step 7: Drying:
- Place the couching cloth with the sheet face up on a flat, absorbent pressing surface.
- Carefully remove the couching cloth, leaving the hemp sheet on the pressing surface.
- Place another damp couching cloth on top of the hemp sheet and place a heavy weight on top to press and flatten it.
- Allow the sheet to dry naturally or place it between sheets of blotting paper to speed up the drying process.
Step 8: Finishing Touches:
- Once completely dry, carefully peel off the hemp sheet from the pressing surface or blotting paper.
- Use a ruler and utility knife to trim the edges of the hemp paper to your desired size and shape.
