How to Paint Over Grease

Painting over grease requires proper preparation to ensure good adhesion and a lasting paint finish. Here's how to paint over grease:

Materials:

- Degreaser or TSP (trisodium phosphate) cleaner

- Rags or scrubbing pads

- Sandpaper (120-grit)

- Water-based primer for interior surfaces or oil-based primer for exterior surfaces

- Interior or exterior paint

Preparation:

1. Clean the Surface: Wear protective gloves. Clean the greasy surface thoroughly with a degreaser or TSP cleaner and warm water. Scrub the area with a rag or scrubbing pad to remove all grease and dirt. Rinse with clean water and let it dry completely.

2. Sanding: After the surface is dry, lightly sand it with 120-grit sandpaper to create a scuffed surface that will help the primer and paint adhere better. Wipe away the dust generated during sanding.

Priming:

1. Use Primer: Apply a suitable water-based primer for interior surfaces or an oil-based primer for exterior surfaces. Primers specifically designed to block stains or seal grease stains work best. Follow the primer manufacturer's instructions regarding application and drying time.

2. Multiple Coats: If necessary, apply multiple thin coats of primer to thoroughly cover the grease marks. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next.

Painting:

1. Paint Selection: Choose a water-based or oil-based paint compatible with the primer you used. If you're unsure, consult with a paint store professional.

2. Thinning: If needed, thin the paint according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Thinning can help the paint penetrate any remaining grease residues and ensure better coverage.

3. Application: Start by painting the edges and corners using a brush. Then, use a roller to apply the paint in even, thin coats, moving in different directions to avoid roller marks.

4. Multiple Coats: Apply multiple thin coats of paint to achieve complete coverage and ensure durability. Allow each coat to dry thoroughly as per the paint product instructions.

5. Drying: Allow the final coat of paint to dry completely as specified by the manufacturer before moving furniture or placing any objects on the painted surface.

Tips:

- Test the degreaser or TSP cleaner on a small inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn't damage the surface.

- For stubborn grease marks, you may need to repeat the cleaning and sanding process before applying the primer.

- Work in a well-ventilated area when using cleaning solutions and paints.

- Allow sufficient drying time between each step to ensure a smooth and durable paint finish.
