- Mineral spirits or paint stripper
- Abrasive pads or sandpaper
- Rags or towels
- Gloves

- Drop cloth
Instructions:
1. Preparation:
- Prepare the floor by removing all furniture and fixtures. Cover any remaining surfaces with a drop cloth to protect from paint stripper or chemicals.
- Put on gloves and safety glasses to protect yourself.
2. Softening the Paint:
- Use a heat gun or hot air dryer to soften the oil-based paint. Hold it a few inches away from the surface and move it constantly to avoid overheating the floor.
3. Scraping:
- After the paint is softened, use a paint scraper or putty knife to gently scrape off the paint. Be careful not to dig into the wood.
4. Chemical Stripper Application:
- Apply a paint stripper specifically formulated for oil-based paints to the remaining paint. Follow the instructions on the product label for application time.
- The stripper will soften the paint, making it easier to remove.
5. Scraping and Cleaning:
- Use the scraper or putty knife again to scrape off the softened paint.
- Wipe the area clean with rags or towels to remove paint residue.
6. Sanding (Optional):
- If there are any stubborn areas of paint or uneven spots, you may opt to sand the floor using abrasive pads or sandpaper.
- Sand in the direction of the wood fibers to avoid damaging the floor.
7. Cleaning and Neutralizing:
- Use mineral spirits to remove any remaining paint stripper or residue.
- Follow up with a damp rag or towel to clean and neutralize the surface.
8. Drying:
- Allow the floor to dry completely.
Tips:
- Test a small area with the paint stripper before applying it to the entire floor to ensure it doesn't damage the wood.
- Work in a well-ventilated area, and avoid contact of chemicals with skin or eyes.
- Be patient, as removing oil-based paint can be time-consuming.
- If the surface of the wood appears damaged or uneven after removing the paint, you may need to refinish the floor.
If the paint is particularly old, adhered, or covers a large surface area, it's recommended to seek professional help for efficient and effective removal.
