How to Calculate Total Square Feet With Height, Width & Length for Painting

Before painting a room, apartment or house yourself, purchase all the equipment you need, like brushes, rollers and drop clothes. Also purchase enough paint. An employee at the hardware store can tell you how many square feet a given amount of paint will cover, but it is up to you to determine just how many square feet are involved in your project.

  Draw on paper a rough diagram of the room or rooms you will be painting.

  Go to one of the walls you will be painting and use the tape measure to measure the length and height. Multiply these two numbers together.

  Use the same technique to measure any parts of the wall you would not be painting, such as doors, windows, appliances or vents. Subtract this number from the number you got in step 2 and write the result on the wall in your diagram.

  Repeat this process for all of the walls you will be painting. Add up the numbers you have written on the diagram. This is the total number of square feet for which you will need paint.
