How to Resupport a Main Beam

A building's structure is what keeps it standing upright. This structure consists of footings, columns and beams. The beams are the horizontal members made from a steel "I" beam or several sections of lumber nailed and glued together. These beams are supported by the foundation on the outside and columns in the center. Occasionally, homeowners remove columns when renovating to open up a room. This can result in sunken floors and even a building collapse. Resupporting the beam can return support to the structure.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a location along the beam to place the jack post. This is ideally in the center of the other supporting systems. It must also be located under a stable floor that is either concrete or supported from below down to the ground.

    • 2

Place the bottom plate, flat-side down, on the floor in the location directly below the beam. Insert the larger diameter post on the plate with the holes side up.

    • 3

Push the smaller diameter post inside the larger post with the holes at the bottom.

    • 4

Screw in the adjustment screw all the way, on the top of the smaller diameter post.

    • 5

Lift the smaller diameter post until the top of the adjustment screw touches the beam. Align the holes in the small post with the holes in the large post and insert two bolts through the holes. Attach the bolts with the supplied nuts.

    • 6

Insert the top plate on top of the adjustment screw with the flat side up. Turn the adjustment screw until it barely touches the beam.

    • 7

Place a level on the side of the post and adjust it so that it is perfectly straight. You will need to level it from two different sides to accomplish this.

    • 8

Tighten the adjustment screw with a wrench until it is very tight against the beam. Place the level on the beam and tighten the adjustment screw until the beam is level.
