How to Install Curtain Rods in a Rented Apartment

What You'll Need:

- Curtain rods

- Brackets

- Screws

- Drywall anchors (if needed)

- Power drill

- Measuring tape

- Level

Before you begin:

Take measurements to ensure the curtain rods will fit the windows. Typically, you'll want the curtain rods to extend at least 3-6 inches beyond the edge of the window frame on both sides.

- Select your curtain rods.

Measure the width of your window and add 8-12 inches to determine the length of the curtain rod you need. You'll also need to decide what style of curtain rod you want. There are many different styles to choose from, so take your time and find one that fits your taste and budget.

- Install the brackets.

Most curtain rods come with brackets that are used to attach the rod to the wall. If your brackets are not pre-drilled, you will need to use a power drill to create pilot holes. Hold the bracket up to the wall and mark the locations of the holes. Then, use a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the screws to create pilot holes.

- Insert the anchors.

If you're drilling into drywall, you will need to use drywall anchors. To install a drywall anchor, simply push it into the hole until it is flush with the wall. Then, insert the screw into the anchor and tighten it until it is secure.

- Attach the curtain rods.

Once the brackets are installed, you can attach the curtain rods. Simply slide the rods through the brackets and tighten the screws until they are secure.

- Hang your curtains.

Finally, you can hang your curtains. Simply slide the curtain panels onto the curtain rods and adjust them until they are evenly spaced.

Tips:

- If you're not sure how high to hang your curtain rods, a good rule of thumb is to hang them about 4-6 inches above the top of the window frame.

- If you're using lightweight curtains, you may be able to get away with using nails instead of screws. However, screws are always the best option for heavy curtains.

- If you're drilling into a concrete wall, you will need to use a masonry drill bit.

- If you're not comfortable installing curtain rods yourself, you can always hire a handyman to do it for you.
