Modern Bathroom Paint Ideas

Bathrooms have come a long way from the pink-tiled, shiny white-painted cubicles of the 1950s. With the advent of faux painting and the popularity of vivid, warm paint colors, you can make a modern bathroom a fun, functional space with a gallon of paint and a few hours of work. Here are some paint ideas for rejuvenating your bathroom.
  1. Choose a Color Theme

    • Consider the fixed features, such as flooring and tile. Most modern homes have neutral colors here, so your options are likely wide open for bathroom wall paint colors. Don't be afraid to go dark and dramatic--full bathrooms usually have little wall space because of the tile, windows and doors, and the effect will not be cave-like. Guest bathrooms are perfect small rooms to let your creativity soar.

Also consider who uses the bathroom. The look you choose for your contemporary spa master bath may be quite different to your choice for the children's bathroom, where brighter, primary colors may be more suitable.

Colors can be pulled together with accessories. If you're stumped for ideas, find some towels, rugs, shower curtains and other elements you love, and echo those hues in the paint color. Any paint store will custom match anything you bring in.

Paint color trends change. Decorators and paint manufacturers track these trends and report on them annually. Check the link in Resources for the newest color ideas from the Paint Quality Institute.

    Consider Faux

    • Sponging, ragging and glazing are fairly simple faux painting techniques, and depending on the colors you choose, can be tranquil and soft or dramatic.

With a little more planning and work (and several rolls of blue painter's tape) you can paint punchy stripes, color blocks and geometric designs. A simpler way to introduce a second color without quite so much taping is to paint an accent wall. This can be a good compromise between having the whole room a dramatic color or having it all neutral.

Consider stenciling. Kits are available at many craft and paint stores with either precut designs or materials to make your own designs. Stencils can be decorative abstracts, lettering or specific designs for kids' bathrooms.

Don't want to go to the bother of faux painting? There are several special-effect paints on the market. Look into dramatic metallics, sand- or suede-textured paint or old fashioned, environmentally friendly milk paint. You may have to find a specialty paint or decorating store or online retailer for these products.

    Think Creatively

    • There is no rule that ceilings and trim must be white. A ceiling painted in a darker color than the walls can give your larger bathroom a cozier feel. Trim painted a different color (try black!) can give a contemporary, sleek feel to a modern bathroom. Worn wooden bathroom vanities can be updated with paint. With the proper preparation and materials, even tile and countertops can be painted.
