How to Check if a Home Propane Tank Is Empty

Clean, reliable propane, the heating system of choice for many homeowners, provides a source of energy for lights, appliances and heating units for air and water. The fuel is stored as pressurized liquid in holding tanks that can be refilled as needed. Propane suppliers schedule regular visits to resupply homes with propane. If you fear your propane supply is running low, check the propane tank yourself to ensure you won't be without fuel for your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Sniff the air inside your home for the scent of propane. As propane tanks become almost empty, the peculiar odor is more noticeable.

    • 2

Locate your home propane tank, which must be at least 10 feet away from your home.

    • 3

Look for the volume gauge, which should be prominently displayed on top of the tank or perhaps underneath a small hood. Look for a needle gauge with numbers ranging from 5 to 95, indicating the percentage of volume or percentage full.

    • 4

Read the propane volume gauge and determine where the needle is pointing. If it's at 10 percent or less, the tank is nearly empty. Call your propane supplier and schedule an immediate visit.
