I Can't Get the Pilot Light to Light in My Duo Therm

A pilot light is a smaller, constantly-lit flame in your furnace that lights the primary burners whenever the furnace activates. Modern Duo-Therm furnaces use electric ignitors that accomplish the same goal while older Duo-Therm systems may have flame-based pilot lights. If your pilot light will not work at all, there are several things you can try to find and solve a problem.
  1. Reset

    • Look for a reset button on your furnace and use it to reset all systems. This simple step can often solve any signal issues your furnace may be experiencing, allowing the pilot light to function properly again. If you cannot find a reset button, turn the system and its thermostat off completely (including the gas valve) and wait for several minutes before turning it back on.

    Clean

    • If your pilot light looks dirty or corroded, it probably has a blockage preventing enough gas from flowing into it. Clean the pilot light thoroughly, removing any built-up soot and then try to light it again. If it still doesn't work, call in a professional to see whether there is a clog somewhere in the line or whether the pilot light needs to be replaced entirely.

    Adjust

    • Pilot lights have an adjustment option that allows you to turn the flame up and down in intensity by adjusting the gas flow. Your gas flow may simply not be strong enough to light the pilot light properly. By turning up the gas flow, you may be able to light the pilot. Open the front panel of your Duo-Therm and look for the flame adjustment knob to make the change.

    Test

    • You can also test your furnace battery (in the case of an electrical pilot light) and wiring for electrical shortages. Duo-Therm suggests you unplug your furnace and turn off all nearby appliances to prevent any electrical issues. Use an ammeter or multimeter to test the wiring. Positive wires should have a 0 amp readout. If amperage exists, you have a shortage in the system that is preventing the furnace from igniting properly.
