How to Adjust the Burners on a Goodman Furnace

The majority of homes in the United States are heated through gas or electric furnaces. As with any appliance in your home, your furnace must be inspected on a semi-regular basis to ensure proper working order. Goodman is one of the leading furnace manufacturers, and occasionally its pilot flames need to be adjusted to ensure they are firing properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off electric power to the furnace by flipping the designated circuit breaker to the “off” position.

    • 2

Remove the front panel from the furnace. The exact step to do so will vary according to your Goodman furnace. Typically, the front panel may be removed by unscrewing a series of screws along the sides of the furnace.

    • 3

Locate the burners, and inspect the quality of the burner flame. Ideally, the flame should be straight and bright blue in color; however, if the flame is yellow or is bending to one side the burner may be dirty or need adjusting.

    • 4

Locate the gas valve on the rear of the furnace. The exact placement of the furnace gas valve will vary according to its model. Turn the gas valve to the “off” position. Ensure the pilot flames are completely out before moving onto the next step.

    • 5

Clean the pilot nozzle, which is the area where the pilot flame is ignited, with a wire brush. If the area is too dark, use a flashlight to ensure all noticeable debris is cleaned from the burners.

    • 6

Turn the electricity back on by flipping the circuit breaker to the “on” position, and activate gas flow by switching the gas valve to the “on” position. Review the quality of the pilot flame. The flames should be straight and blue. Edges that are slightly green or yellow are acceptable.

    • 7

Locate the gas shutter on the rear of the furnace. The gas shutter valve is typically found in the rear of the furnace where the gas pipe enters the appliance. Turn the gas shutter clockwise until the pilot flame jumps and then settles itself over the pilot nozzle. Return the gas shutter to its resting position after all pilot flames have jumped and returned to the pilot nozzle.

Review the pilot flames after their adjustment. If the pilot flames are still not burning straight and blue, contact a professional to troubleshoot the problem. If the pilot flames are all burning straight and blue, turn off the electricity by flipping the circuit breaker to the “off” position.

Reattach the front panel. Reactivate the electricity to the furnace by switching the circuit breaker to the “off” position.
