How to Install Wood Burning Stoves in a Brick Fireplace

Fireplaces create an inviting warm glow in a home, but they aren't very efficient when it comes to heating the home beyond the immediate vicinity of the fireplace. Because of their open design, it's difficult to control the burn rate of a fire in a fireplace, and much of the heat energy goes straight up the chimney. Installing a wood stove in or in front of the fireplace can increase the efficiency of your wood heat system substantially.

Instructions

Clean out your fireplace chimney thoroughly. Use a purpose-made chimney flue brush on a fiberglass pole. Standing on the rooftop, slide this brush down the flue of the chimney and move it back and forth. This will create a clean chimney that is free of soot and creosote with which to vent your wood stove.

Place the wood stove in front of the fireplace. If you have a large fireplace and a small wood stove, you can put the wood stove directly into the fireplace and vent it with a pipe that goes straight up into the chimney. If the wood stove is too large, you will have to place it in front of the fireplace and run a pipe back to the chimney.

Determine how much pipe you need based on where your woodstove is being installed. If it's in front of the fireplace, you will need several lengths of black stovepipe and two 90-degree angles. Assemble these pieces by sliding the ends of the stovepipe into the angles, drilling small holes through them and screwing them together.

Attach the end of the stovepipe to the damper in your chimney. Depending on what kind of damper you have, you will need some type of adapter to fit the two together. You can find these at some home improvement stores as well as at any specialty wood stove and heating store.

Attach the other end of the stovepipe to the smoke hole in your woodstove. Connect both ends of the stovepipe with three screws distributed evenly around the circumference of the pipe.
