How to Make Block Ice for My Cooler

Materials:

- Ice cube trays or plastic containers with lids

- Water

- Salt

- Freezer

Instructions:

Step 1: Freeze Water

Fill the ice cube trays or plastic containers with water, leaving a little space at the top for expansion. Place them in the freezer until completely frozen.

Step 2: Prepare the Brine Solution

In a separate bowl or container, mix salt with water. The ratio of salt to water will depend on the size of your ice block. A good rule of thumb is to use about 1/4 cup of salt to 4 cups of water. The brine solution should be saturated, meaning that there is as much salt as the water can dissolve.

Step 3: Dip the Frozen Cubes in Brine

Once the water in the trays is completely frozen, remove the trays from the freezer and take out the ice cubes. Quickly dip each ice cube in the brine solution. The salt water will adhere to the surface of the ice.

Step 4: Place the Cubes Back in Freezer

Place the salt-coated ice cubes back in the freezer on a sheet pan. Freeze for another hour or until the cubes are completely solid.

Step 5: Pack the Ice Cubes in Your Cooler

To use your block ice, simply pack the ice cubes in your cooler. The salt coating will slow down the melting process, keeping your food and drinks colder for longer.

Bonus Tip:

If you want to make a large block of ice, you can also use a large plastic container or a food storage container. Simply fill the container with water, add salt to the water, and place it in the freezer until completely frozen. You can then cut the block of ice into smaller pieces as needed.
