How to Connect a Floor Register to Ductwork

In a typical heating and air conditioning system, you may encounter registers in the ceiling, on the wall, at the baseboard level or in the floor. Floor registers are common in front of patio doors or floor-to-ceiling windows. By placing the registers directly in front of the window, the air blowing out of them will "wash" up along the window, which helps prevent drafts. Once properly installed, you can walk across a floor register as if it were part of the floor.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the dimensions of the floor opening that contains the ductwork boot. A floor register that is too small could fall into the ductwork; one that is too big will not fit in the opening.

    • 2

Select a floor register with a neck that is slightly smaller than that of the floor opening. Many different types of floor registers are available, including ones made of simple stamped metal and ones with intricate designs.

    • 3

Align the neck of the floor register with the floor opening. Insert one corner slightly into the opening. Work the remaining neck of the floor register into the opening. No screws are needed. Gravity will hold the floor register in the opening.
