How to Unclog a Frozen Furnace Vent

Furnace vents can become clogged for several reasons. Animals or debris, such as leaves, can blow into the vents. However, snow and ice clogging the vent is more likely. This happens when the pipe isn't properly insulating. You can fix these problems with regular maintenance and by taking care of your pipes. Keep your pipes warm in the winter so air continues to circulate as needed.

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn the furnace off.

    • 2

Locate the external furnace pipes and examine them. Carefully reach inside and pull out any debris. Avoid pushing debris farther into the pipe.

    • 3

Warm the vent with a hairdryer until any ice or snow melts.

    • 4

Wrap the external pipe in preslit insulation by opening the insulation and sliding it on. Cut it to fit with a utility knife. Peel the paper off the preglued insulation and press the slit closed. Reinforce the seal with insulating tape. Wrap insulating tape around any joints or bends in the pipe.

Install a mesh cover over the end of the pipe. Choose a cover with 1-inch holes in the mesh for the best air circulation. Slide the mesh cover over the head of the pipe and attach it with screws, clips or tighten it on, depending on the type of cover you've chosen.
