How to Repair Scratched Pavers

Concrete pavers have several advantages over blacktop and poured concrete, including ease of installation, maintenance and durability. However, concrete pavers aren’t completely resistant to unsightly scratches. Superficial scratches don’t actually occur on the concrete itself, but rather the sealant used to protect the pavers against moisture damage and sun fading. Repair superficial scratches to your paver’s sealant without specialized tools or professional assistance.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a mixture of two to three drops liquid dish soap and 2 cups water. Stir the ingredients to create a sudsy mixture.

    • 2

Dampen a rag with the soapy water and wipe down the affected paver. Wet a separate rag with plain water and rinse away the soapy residue. Allow the paver to dry completely before continuing.

    • 3

Rub the paver with a fine-grit aluminum-oxide sanding pad. Using even, back-and-forth motions, work the sanding pad over the affected area to remove the scratched sealant.

    • 4

Wipe away the sanding dust with a tack cloth. Slip on a pair of rubber gloves, safety goggles and a respirator before applying a thin layer of concrete sealant to the paver with a vinyl paintbrush.

    • 5

Allow the first coat of concrete sealant to set for at least eight hours, or overnight, before applying a second, thin layer. Allow the final coat to cure for at least 24 hours before stepping on or cleaning the paver.
