Propane vs. Natural Gas

You want to start using either propane or natural gas in your home. Which should you choose? The first thing you need to know is that there is absolutely no difference between the two in terms of performance, as they both cook, heat and dry the same. Each gas has its own pros and cons--you decide which are the most important.
  1. Cost

    • Propane, processed from natural gas, is considerably more expensive as a result.

    Environment

    • Both natural gas and propane are clean-burning fuels, but natural gas is classified as a greenhouse gas while propane is not.

    Efficiency

    • Propane contains 2.44 times the useful energy of natural gas.

    Portability

    • Propane compresses easily and natural gas does not, which is why you can buy a portable tank of propane but natural gas must be piped into your home.

    Danger

    • Both propane and natural gas can explode, but natural gas is lighter than air and dissipates easily. Propane is heavier than air, so it stays concentrated and dangerous for a longer period of time.
