How to Size a Natural Gas Tank

Calculating the size of your natural gas tank can make the difference between having the perfect amount of gas and having to refill the tank every other month. The gas tank, which is normally set up in your back yard or on the side of your house, can hold up to 1,000 gallons of gas, or the equivalent of eight months of heating. Sizing your natural gas tank can help you figure out how to make your house more comfortable through the winter.

Check the size of your house. In most cases, you will need a 300-gallon tank for a standard two-bedroom, one-bathroom house (plus or minus a bathroom or bedroom).

Calculate how many appliances and other household items will work off the gas tank. Necessities, such as hot water, heat and stove, can draw from the gas tank. With a house that has one kitchen and one bathroom, you can live with a natural gas tank that is 250 to 400 gallons in size. If you live in a home that has multiple kitchens and stoves, a bigger tank, such as a 750-gallon tank, will suffice.

Consider the weather where you live. Homeowners who live in areas prone to blizzards are likely to use more natural gas to stay warm. Individuals in Southern California, Arizona and other warm states never see snow. They can withstand the coldest months with blankets and a portable heater. Having a bigger tank will allow individuals who live in a chilly area to keep warm and not have to refuel every month.
