How to Calculate Flooring Space for Tiles With Inches

When calculating the amount of tile you need, there are two things to remember. First, tile is measured in inches, even when it is over a foot in length. Second, always purchase a little extra to account for waste or mistakes made during the cutting process.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of your room with the measuring tape and note the length -- in inches -- on a piece of paper.

    • 2

Measure the width of the room and note that measurement down on the same piece of paper.

    • 3

Multiply the two measurements together to get the total square inches of the room.

    • 4

Add approximately 10 percent to the number you came up with in Step 3. This is to account for the inevitable waste or mistakes that may be made.

    • 5

Divide the number you came up with in Step 4 by the dimensions of the tile you wish to use. If, for instance, you wish to use a 12-inch square tile, divide the surface area of the room by 144 (the square inch surface area of the tile). The resulting number will be how many tiles you need to fully cover the floor area.
